An Assisted Living Facility of the DeLand Geriatic Care, Inc.
Both of my parents lived at Good Shepard for quite a few years – Dad for over two years and Mom for almost four years. It is such a lovely environment. They felt like they were “at home” and not in an assisted living facility. They were served three wonderful meals a day with the other residents. I loved the fact that there were never more than 11 residents. My Dad had dementia and his care was excellent. They felt like they were at home. I was allowed to visit any time and family members were always invited to attend their special events around the holidays – Thanksgiving Dinner, wonderful Christmas lunch with entertainment and other great celebrations for the holidays. Good Shepard even served my parents their favorite dinner on their birthdays and anniversary! They have such a great staff with a long tenure so that they know each resident’s preferences. My mom was always brought her favorite tea without even asking! I highly recommend Good Shepard West. The care is top notch and you will never have to worry about your loved one.
This was the absolute best care for my mother before she had to have skilled nursing in a nursing home – the staff is friendly, kind, caring, HONEST and they provide excellent care. My mother was a resident there for 2 years + and both she and I loved it there. A nice family type atmosphere, very clean, spacious; visitors are allowed to visit anytime. I might also mention that it is MUCH more reasonable than most retirement or nursing homes in the area, such as Brookdale, and they provide the same services
I recommend this ALF to anyone looking for excellent, HONEST care at a decent cost.
If your loved one with dementia is in need of an Assisted Living Facility, I can’t imagine that you could find a better location in DeLand, or even in West Volusia County. My father spent the last 13 months of his life at the Good Shepard West, and I wish he would have been able to come to live there earlier. The staff is highly trained and very sensitive to every resident’s needs (there are never more than 11). The food is terrific! My father had been losing weight for years and gained 5 (much needed) pounds within three months of his arrival. The directors, Ramon, and Gina Gutierrez, exercise gentle and creative supervision of the beautiful home (once owned by one of the richest merchants in DeLand). Ramon suggested that they throw a party for my father’s 91st birthday, and made all the arrangements themselves, including a musician and a caterer! It was a wonderful moment, for which I’ll always be grateful.
I cannot say enough about Good Shepherds of Deland. My mother who is in end-stage Alzheimer’s has been a resident for a year and we could not be happier with her care. The Director and staff are caring and compassionate. The staff to resident ratio allows each individual special care and attention. It is very much a “home” setting which is a nice change from many larger facilities. It is private pay, but every penny worth it — all-inclusive and no a la carte services. I have never been asked to fork over a dollar more than the contracted fee. Meals are prepared on-site and very tasty. Family is encouraged to share mealtime with their loved one. The director is easily accessible and provides updates consistently. I know my mom is happy there; anytime one of the staff approaches her she lights up and smiles. I highly recommend!
